We all seem to have a little too much clutter, right? Whether you are getting ready to put your house on the market, preparing to move by organizing and packing, or just want to settle more into your current home – decluttering always seems to be a good idea. Here are some decluttering tips to help you prepare for whatever lays ahead of you.

  1. Create a checklist – prioritize what you want to get done by organizing your decluttering project into parts. Scared of starting with the overwhelming attic? Work your way up to it by making it something that you do halfway through the process.
  2. Do a little at a time – for those of us who like to chip away at things, start with just 30 minutes to an hour each day, so that you don’t over-stress yourself.
  3. Separate your belongings – make piles: things to keep, things to put in storage, things to sell or donate, or things to throw away. Take belongings to their respective places little by little so you aren’t stuck facing a giant pile at the end.
  4. Create an online yard sale – or a real one! Ebay, craigslist, and etsy are all great online platforms for getting rid of junk that other people might want. Or set up an old-fashioned outdoor sale on a sunny day.
  5. Ask family or friends to help – sometimes working with a buddy can make the whole challenge feel a lot less daunting.
  6. Listen to your gut – If you are considering getting rid of an object, chances are you should get rid of it. If you are sitting their pondering over whether or not you want something, it probably is safe to say that it can be donated/go in the trash.
  7. Clean as you go – if you are somebody who has a lot of clutter, you may be sifting through a lot of dust as you organize. Take care of it right away by dusting things off as you go along.
  8. Recycle papers – we all are guilting of hanging onto old cards or coupons – if you are getting rid of these items, make sure to recycle them when possible.
  9. Ditch duplicates – from articles of clothing that look similar to too many pieces of silverware – you don’t need doubles, so don’t be afraid to get rid of them.
  10. Check your decorations – sometimes we hang onto knick-knacks and pieces of artwork that we used to love but have grown out of. Take them down and put them into storage if you aren’t ready to part with them yet.
