It doesn’t matter how often or how experienced you are with moving – when the time comes, it never gets any easier. Somehow, a lot of us, no matter what, find ourselves scrambling at the last minute to throw things into boxes or tie up any loose ends that might occur. No matter what you’re finding yourself doing at the last minute, it can really throw off your entire schedule if you’re not careful.
There’s a lot of easy ways to avoid this last minute struggle. If you start early and efficiently, and don’t put off making a lot of final decisions, you can avoid this rush and start decluttering to make your overall process a lot easier.
Pre-Move Decluttering
I think we all reach the point during a move where we kind of just want to get rid of everything and start fresh – just to not have to deal with moving another item. However, we also all know that that’s not exactly the solution to everything. There’s an easy compromise between rushing to throw things in bags at the last minute and going full minimalist: decluttering!
By clearing out unneeded or unwanted items well ahead of time and way before your move, you’ll save yourself a lot of time and stress, and might even make some money in the process.
How to Declutter Your House
Decluttering can be really intimidating as a concept before you actually get into the swing of things, but it’s actually really freeing and easy once you get into the swing of things. An easy way to start decluttering your home before your move is to organize your things room by room.
One room at a time, organize things into ‘keep’, ‘donate’, ‘give away’, ‘sell’, and ‘throw out’. By keeping things sectioned off and sorted into a lot of different categories, you can make the decluttering process a lot easier and a lot faster.
What to Get Rid of Before Moving
- Clothing: A really easy way to cut down on things you’ll need to pack is by clearing out unneeded or clothes that you don’t wear as much.
- Bulky Items: Any items that you don’t really need or use, and that take up a lot of space can be pretty easily cleared out and sold or donated to make a lot more room in your current home. This will also make it way easier to move!
- Papers/Documents: If you have any old papers or documents that you’re not using and don’t need, don’t try to move all of those awkward papers. Get them shredded or otherwise safely and responsibly disposed of them.
- Furniture: If you have an old chair or nightstand collecting dust in your basement, don’t bother trying to move it for no reason! Donate or sell these on Facebook Marketplace or eBay to get them out of your hair prior to your move.
- Appliances: If your kitchen is covered in bulky appliances that you don’t use, or maybe that are upgraded already in your new home, sell, donate, or throw them away!
By starting early and getting rid of unneeded or unused items before you start the actual packing process, you’ll save yourself a ton of time and effort.
It’s easy to be intimidated or get caught up in the constant stress that is the moving process, but don’t worry! With the right process and preparation, you’re setting yourself up for success.
